This book describes the teleoperated android Geminoid, which has a very humanlike appearance, movements, and perceptions, requiring unique developmental techniques. The book facilitates understanding of the framework of android science and how to use it in real human societies. Creating body parts of soft material by molding an existing person using a shape-memory form provides not only the humanlike texture of the body surface but also safe physical interaction, that is, humanlike interpersonal interaction between people and the android. The teleoperation also highlights novel effects in telecommunication. Operators of the Geminoid feel the robots body as their own, and people encountering the teleoperated Geminoid perceive the robots body as being possessed by the operator as well. Where does the feeling of human presence come from? Can we transfer or reproduce human presence by technology? Geminoid may help to answer these questions. Hiroshi Ishigro is a professor in the Department of Systems Innovation and the Department of Adaptive Machine Systems, Osaka University, and group leader at ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories. Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: A+, , course: Literary History and Theory, language: English, abstract: Published in 1968 Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, the novel is set in a post-apocalyptic near-future America, which is falling apart, after a nuclear war called World War Terminus. Animals are almost extinct and keeping and owning animals have become an obsession for the remaining society. The worst thing a human can do is to harm an animal or to feel nothing at the idea of harming an animal. Thus caring for an animal has become symbol of ones humanity. However, because genuine animals are extremely expensive very few people can afford them and so most people are forced towards the much cheaper electric animals to keep up the pretence. To own a real animal is a sign of distinction and prestige. Before the storys beginning Deckard owned a genuine sheep, but it died, and Deckard had to replace it with an electric one. Deckards electric sheep leaves him discontent as he yearns for the prestige that would come with the ownership of a real animal. The novel is arguably as influential and relevant today as when it came out. Its social commentary and critique of a twenty-first century America in the grip of soul-crushing hyper-capitalism can be said to be poignant still. The works of Philip K. Dick and, in particular, Do Androids Dream has attracted a small army of scholars and theorist who have applied everything from psychoanalytical criticism to postmodernism. However, a Marxist criticism has not been applied to Do Androids Dream so far. Such a reading is the focus of this paper, as I find that there are several reference to Marxist theory. Throughout the novel, Dick provides a profound social commentary through the vision of a near-future dystopian society. Dick vividly demonstrates how consumerism and capitalism can create a society loaded with socialist elements, even in a world that has suffered nuclear war. Through Deckard who contemplates his place in society via his disdain of his electric sheep, Dick forces the reader to consider the importance of material possessions and how they can affect social status. One would assume that material things would have less significance in a world that has suffered a nuclear holocaust, however, Do Androids Dream shows the opposite; namely, a scenario where ones possessions in society are of the utmost importance. To illustrate how a dystopian society would still hold material possessions in such high regard, Dick embeds numerous Marxist elements into his work as h

Lacy Dawn´s father relives the Gulf War, her mother´s teeth are rotting out, and her best friend is murdered by the meanest daddy on Earth. Life in the hollow is hard. She has one advantage – an android was inserted into her life and is working with her to cure her parents. But, he wants something in exchange. It´s up to her to save the Universe. Lacy Dawn doesn´t mind saving the universe, but her family and friends come first. Rarity from the Hollow is adult social science fiction filled with tragedy, comedy and satire. ´´The abuse in the book is graphic, but the story arc is hopeful: a family recovering and becoming better together.´´ Publishers Weekly ´´A fun, sometimes cleverly-gonzo, and even inspiring tale about an undaunted girl´s close encounter of the weird kind.´´ - David Brin, Award Winning SciFi Author ´´Amusing at times, shocking at others, a touching and somehow wonderful SFF read.´´ Amazing Stories Magazine ´´...In the space of a few lines we go from gritty realism to pure sci-fi/fantasy. It´s quite a trip.´´ -- The Missouri Review ´´Brilliant satires such as this are genius works of literature in the same class as Orwell´s Animal Farm. I can picture American Lit professors sometime in the distant future placing this masterpiece on their reading list.´´ --Marcha Fox, Retired NASA Engineer and SciFi Author ´´...utterly compelling...a chilling, engaging verisimilitude that deftly feeds on both the utter absurdity of the characters´ motivations and on the progression of the plot.... In the spirit of Vonnegut, Eggleton takes the genre and gives it another quarter turn.´´ - Electric Review / Midwest Book Review ´´...a hillbilly version of Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy ...serious subjects like poverty, ignorance, abuse...tongue-in-cheek humor without trivializing them...profound...a funny book that most sci-fi fans will thoroughly enjoy.´´-- Awesome Indies ´´...sneaks up you and, before you know it, you are either laughing like crazy or crying in despair, but the one thing you won´t be is unmoved...a brilliant writer.´´ -- Readers´ Favorite ´´The most enjoyable science fiction novel I have read in several years....´´ -- Temple Emmet Williams , Retired Reader´s Digest Editor ´´...Good satire is hard to find and science fiction satire is even harder to find.´´ -- The Baryon Review ´´...This piece of speculative fiction is nothing like anything I´ve read before...faces reality head-on while also pursuing themes that are outlandish...aptly mingled tragedy with humor....´´ -- Page Hungry Bookworm ´´...It is one of those books that if it does not make you think, you are not really reading it....´´ -- On My Kindle ´´...the writing feels timeless, classic and mature...could be read in a college setting both for the craft itself and its unique brand of storytelling. The premise was brilliant - Tabby A. Fae, My Trending Stories ´´...difficult, funny, terribly sad, absolutely true, and extremely well told. It should be the winner of literary prizes....´´ Mary Thornburg, Award Winning SciFi Author
